Animal Symbolism—Cicada

Animal Symbolism—Cicada

I love the sound of the Cicada. It’s the sound of summer; the sun, heat and humidity accompanied by the explosion of plant growth. I found one the other day while walking through my apartment complex. It was on the ground, and dead of course, probably killed by a Cicada Killer (big nasty hornet).

Cicada is a great omen and I was thrilled to get it. It means that my energy has shifted to a more positive vibration (everything in the Universe vibrates at a specific frequency). I have recently reconnected with some old friends and it’s been a wonderful experience. The appearance of Cicada can indicate a happy time with old friends and renewing old ties. And this has certainly been the case for me.

When Cicada shows up in your life, a gift or opportunity that could surprise you is coming your way. It will bring you much joy. Also, we will tend to attract the opposite sex (or same sex if you are gay) much more easily. There will be more offers and invitations that could come out of the blue.

Sometimes Cicada reminds us of the need for change. Perhaps we are stuck in the past and reliving old memories. These feelings will hold us back as they no longer serve us. So, if that’s the case, use the energy of Cicada to help you move forward.

Hi! I was walking along the side walk when I felt something hit my right shoulder. I was preoccupied, trying to cross the street to get to the corner store and didn’t think anything of it. When I got into the store I happened to turn my head to the right when I saw something on my shoulder so I gently swiped my shoulder thinking it was a leaf when I realized it was a cicada. What does it mean when a cicada falls on your right shoulder?

Shoulders can represent the burdens or responsibilities that we carry, which can inclued the emotions of others. I see the right side of the body as the male side, the part of us that takes action, and the left side as the feminine part of us that receives. That said, it could be a message that some burden will be lifted, or perhaps an offer or opportunity that could come from a male.

My first time in this lifetime ever seeing one. I work third shift with a hospice patient. I found a dead cicada on the floor, looked as if it were stepped on. Does this mean I’m dying soon?

    • Shelley Shayner
Posted at 13:50h, 01 September Reply

Seeing a cicada is never a bad omen, so no, don’t think you’re dying anytime soon. I feel the message may be for the hospice patient, that perhaps relatives on the other side are giving them a sign. For you, in particular, I feel a wish of yours is coming true—some kind of achievement or goal or object, maybe even a new car.

Hi John. Everything has a meaning. Cicada wants to give you a message. The veils are thinning between worlds and humans are beginning to become aware of signs, symbols and psychic phenomena, and this will only increase. So, my advice to you from Spirit is to learn how to connect with this part of yourself, your Soul. You may be surprised at what happens 🙂

I moved in with my sister after ending a 5 year emotionally abusive relationship. I have been here for over a month and have not heard a single cicada. As I am sitting here, creating a ‘blog style’ Facebook Page (Self-Love Awakening), a single cicada began to ROAR! LOL
I stopped and immediately search the spiritual meaning of a cicada. I scrolled several pages but landed here.
I would appreciate any insight your may have.
    Stay encouraged,

Omg I am so relieved to have found your blog and this post bc a live cicada just scared the daylights out of me – I was sitting on my back porch with my dog and I felt something hit he right side of my upper back..I waited ab 60 seconds before gently swiping that area, and when I did I startled the cicada and it started screaming (or singing) and kept on screaming until it fell to the ground (i leaped up from the chair I was sitting in when I felt it on my back with my hand). I believe it’s playing dead right now…?! My dog is surprisingly laying down facing it…I feel like she trying to comfort it (….?) instead of being scared of it (she’s a big baby, normally she would be hugging my side, but she has oddly been super calm after she got close to it) I really do think it’s still alive

I was thinking ab a relationship that they ended in a very hurtful way 3 months ago bc he randomly messaged me last Friday night even though he knows that I do not want anything to do with him. I still feel very emotional ab the whole thing- I would love to hear your thoughts concerning my cicada. I could see how it could rep both an absolute last ending & possibility of another reunion with this particular person

    Thank you!

What a way to get your attention! lol … yes, I’d have to say that it is most likely the relationship you mention coming back into your life. But you ‘swiped’ the cicada and it fell, then started screaming. So I would say there is a desperate quality to this person trying to come back and the relationship was ‘playing dead’ but now may come back to life, if you let it.

Changes in your energy are taking place (I feel positive). The symbol of a car is your power and will to move around or direction in life; it represents a personal transformation.

Hey, have a quandary here. Cicada has always been a force in my life. I love their songs and have since I was a child. Just today I ran across a Cicada Killer on my porch and it was defending it territory. I only figured out what it was after some searching but here is where the dilemma comes in. How do I reconcile my flow with cicada with a message from the wasp/hornet family where the messenger kills cicadas to propagate its species. Is the message that the old way must die and be used as fuel for a new way? Could really use some outside my head input. Thank you.

Hi! Your site is amazing! And just today, I found a dead cicada on the balcony and I was wondering what this meant and what I should do with it. Should I keep the cicada? Or should I just throw it away? I’m afraid that if I just throw it away, it means that I’m throwing away good luck. Thank you for your advice!

Posted at 16:43h, 06 April Reply

Hi Ella, thank you for the kudos on my site! Since the cicada could mean a variety of things (luck, reunions, surprises), it’s hard to say exactly. But if we look at the symbolism of the balcony, where the cicada appeared, we might get a better idea of what might be coming your way, or the context of the event. The balcony is a place where we tend to view things that are a far away. In this case, the ‘event’ is something that is approaching, and is not here yet. Also, looking out from a balcony can give you a sense of the direction your future is taking. In this case, it would be a positive omen considering the symbolism of the cicada. If you decide to throw the cicada away, thank it first. If you keep it, it will be a reminder of the luck that is coming. It’s up to you 🙂

      Blessings,
      Shelley

Hi! For the last weeks I’ve had the precense of a cicada on my car. The first time, it was early in the morning by the wipers. I thought it was dead or stuck so I tried getting it out and it was buzzing loud all scared….it kept making itself more stuck, I finally helped it out and it flew off. Then just this morning, I see one on my car tire….It was just hanging out but since I had to go to work, I didn’t want to crush it while I drove so I tried getting it…and it put it’s little leg on my finger but then freaked out and flew off.

Last night, after walking my dog, i found a cicada on the fridge door. I live on 16th floor appartment. Way higher then trees.. How did it end up there? And what does it mean.
I took it out and place it on my jasmin plant outside on the balcony.. This is 2nd time I am touching a real live cicada this summer. The first time was exactly a month ago. I went for a walk during lunch time it was on the ground. I picked it up and place it on a nearby tree..Please what these 2 circumstances mean to my life.. Thank you

      Hi Thach Chan Ra,
I can’t say exactly what the message is for you, but would suggest that you ask the cicada yourself during a light meditation, then trust what ‘pops’ in your head. If you still don’t understand, ask for more messages in dreams, or other synchronistic events like talking to someone, seeing an article somewhere. Does this make sense? It could be that an old friend will contact you, or to spend more time doing joyful activities. Obviously, the cicada is trying to get your attention, but more importantly, your Soul or Higher Self might be sending you messages in symbols to awaken you to other realities. More and more of this kind of thing will be happening to many people as the planetary grid shifts into higher frequencies.

I hope this answers your questions 🙂

      Blessings,
      Shelley

    Hi Shelley,
I am so happy to have found you and your informative site! I have Tree outside that I first noticed a cicada about a month ago on top of its skin and since then m girls pointed out at least. Dozen or more of these sheddings. My one daughter also pointed out a chrysalis on this same tree. I live in southern Ontario, Canada. I was just wondering if there is more meaning with the fact that there are soooo many of them? What do you think? I would love o hear your insight 🙂
    Thank you Shelley!

Posted at 20:18h, 23 August Reply

Hi Nycki, and thank you for stopping by! So glad you like the info too! As far as your question goes, it depends on what type of tree the cicadas were on, and where that tree is located, assuming it’s on your property. More symbols can be used to interpret the message for a deeper meaning by including the tree. The chrysalis is very telling as well when coupled with cicada symbolism. The energy of transformation is around you and/or your family in some aspects of your life and it is a happy omen of change … perhaps taking root and grounding into a new reality for you as signified by the tree. One of the aspects of cicada is the need for change, so the chrysalis would be a confirmation of that. Also, it could be that something you are doing could eventually bring you much happiness when it is ‘birthed’ into the world, like a creative project, new skills for a job, a new business, etc.

What do you think the symbols mean?

      Blessings,
      Shelley

I walked out my front door the other morning and a cicada is sitting just beyond my door stop on my entrance mat on the porch. I took a few pictures and oogled over it and went on my way. I didn’t want to disturb it. Later that day my father in law heard it buzzing and went out to see and a skink lizard was in the process of trying to swallow it. I was quite bummed. Any meaning to any of this? I’ve never had a live cicada that close to my front door. It was very far from the grove of woods that I hear them in passing by in my car. A good three blocks or so from my house.

Hi Jeanie. Lizard represents dreaming, and the subconscious, so perhaps your subconscious is trying to alert you that a change is needed or an opportunity is coming, one that has been manifested by you, as I believe we are all creators of our world. The front door suggests to me that someone may be coming into your life, or an opportunity will be available to you. There may also be a man coming into your life or returning.

No, I do not believe that a dead Cicada is a bad omen at all. It could mean that something is ending in your life that no longer serves you, or that you need to sever ties with someone. Interpretation of any symbol or omen can get a bit tricky if it’s not obvious what the message is pertaining to in your life. If that’s the case, meditate, reflect or journal on the symbol/omen and allow the answer to come to you after a in a day or two.

I was walking in the park and saw some movement on the asphalt walking path. I stopped and looked down and saw a big cicada, but it was moving very slowly. I stood there and stared at it for a few seconds. A woman came by with her dog and asked if I was all right, if I had lost something. It’s funny because minutes earlier I had been thinking ‘How did I lose myself?’ It looks like my energy is a little bit ahead of actual circumstances in my life at the moment.

Shelley, thank you so much for this. I just had a cicada pop onto my balcony. It was on it’s back but righted itself before I had the chance to help. As soon as he was upright, he began to sing for me. I felt such a strong vibration rush through me. I got the chills all over and felt very excited. I knew it had to be an omen. I have a book on animal totems but it doesn’t address the cicada. I did a web-search and found your blog. Interestingly, I had been thinking about an old flame with whom I’ve kept in contact over the years. We’ve both held on to a small hope that we would one day be toghether again but recently, I’ve been conflicted about whether or not to let it go. If what you say has any bearing, the time to let go may be upon me. Thank you again! Jonathan

You may appreciate this tale of syncronicity. I had a cicada come visit me the other night. It sat on the picnic table in front of me for some time until an overly eager friend annoyed it away by trying to get it to climb on his finger. I thought the bug was beautiful and mentioned it in a note to a friend (of the opposite sex) who I knew as a child and had recently reconnected with. He wrote back that a cicada had stayed in his room that night and he went to sleep with it still there.

I was so happy to see an otter climb out of the river this morning. Otters mean playfulness and feminine power. But, then my dog who is part wolf, found it and killed it. What does this mean?

    • Shelley Szajner
Posted at 12:47h, 20 August Reply

Well I was very saddened to hear that the otter was killed, since it is such a wonderful, happy creature. But these things do happen, and in your case I’d have to say that since I view dog as a symbol for friends and sticking to goals, perhaps there is a female friend of yours that is jealous, aggressive or in trouble somehow? Are you experiencing power struggles with anyone at the moment? Or are you feeling unable to manifest some long cherished goals of yours or did you stop pursuing a goal or end a friendship?
