23 Apr Animal Symbolism Series—Fox
The first time I encountered Fox was in the Pocono’s for a weekend trip of camping and hiking back in 2003. At the time I was searching for my biological father and using the Genealogy sites offered on the web to try and track him down. I had contacted a few promising names and hoped for a response. When I got home an email was waiting for me. It was from my half brother, and he said in the letter that he believed we were related. It later turned out to be true and Fox lesson number one had been administered. What did I learn, you ask? I believe that in this case Fox was teaching me to use its skill in cunning and the prize was my father.
Fox has been with me ever since and I believe it is a power animal of mine. Sometimes he lies dormant for quite awhile, and when I think, “Yep, he’s gone now,” he shows up again. Lately he’s been very active and sniffing around my hen house more than unusual. Power animals arrive when you need them and depart when the learning/helping is done.
Totem animals are different because they are with you from birth and stay by your side until you move onto the next life. I have three totem animals, and to be honest, I think I have three because I need a lot of help. <grin>
Fox made its presence known again in 2006 when I began my foray into the dating world. I was driving home at dusk and saw him walking along the side of the road with his nose to the ground. At first I didn’t understand why he had shown up. But in hindsight I have come to realize that I needed to hone my skills of discernment to a new level and Mr. Oh So Sly and Clever was going to show me how.
So what does it mean if you see a fox slip quietly through the forest and then turn around to stare at you with inquisitive eyes? Fox is the master of the art of disguise. He can disappear into his surroundings and observe things undetected. If fox suddenly appears in your life then pay close attention to your environment and watch people’s actions—not their words. It will yield bigger clues. Fox will help you detect if someone is trying to deceive you in anyway.
After being with me for six years, Fox has come to symbolize all of the masks that people wear. Fox has taught me many things but the mask symbol is the strongest one for me. So now I say quietly to myself upon meeting someone new, what’s behind the mask?
Symbols of any kind, in both waking and dreaming life need to be interpreted carefully since the meaning will vary according to each individual. I’m still learning from Fox and lately he’s been kicking my bum. But hey, I’ve been paying attention now, really, I have, and just maybe I will pass all of the discernment tests with flying colors very soon. Until then, Fox will be my shadow. I’m just glad he’s so darn cute!

Posted at 08:42h, 21 JuneI’m hoping for an answer or just a little guidance from here.. So the first time I saw this red fox I was sitting on my porch at night and it came trotting through the yard and up the road but stopped about 50 yards away or so and sat there and looked back at me for a good 30-45 seconds. The second time I seen the fox it was crossing the road about another 50 yards or so just as I was about to open my garage door and go in. Once again it stopped in the middle of the road and looked at me, but this time for maybe 15-20 seconds and continued on his way through the neighbor’s yard.. Now this is where it’s gets interesting for me. I was just outside about 330 am sitting on the bottom step of my porch as I do alot at night and the fox came right up the sidewalk from behind me and literally stopped right next to me, so close I could have touched him. At first I thought it was a cat but by the time I realized it was the fox in about 2 seconds, he realized I was right there and we both became startled. He trotted off as I sat there. Maybe about 5 minutes later he came back the exact same way except this time he was about 10 feet away and trotting through the yard. So he basically circled my house and came right back after our first encounter of the night. A couple minutes later he howled 3 times, and it was the cute little howl they have as I researched their different sounds on YouTube. What could this mean? Whatever the meaning is, it means alot to me personally as the last couple years have been rough for me with bouts of depression, lost loved ones, and a serious break-up. Honestly, I need a good kick in the ass to snap outta this funk I’ve been in for far too long and to find my never ending pursuit of happiness.

Posted at 02:11h, 20 JulyDear Shelly,
The notes on fox symbolism are very interesting! I am writing today because I had a strange, semi-delightful with a touch of creepy incident with foxes in my backyard today. I sit in a screened in porch and there is a small steep dropoff about 10 yards from my porch that is overgrown. I was quietly writing on my PC and noticed a flash of red out of the corner of my eye; I thought it was a neighbor’s orange tabby but it was a fox, proudly carrying a fat little squirrel it its mouth. It quietly loped across the yard disappearing into overgrowth. A few minutes later, I caught movement in my neighbors yard about 100 yards away and saw him, and another fox with him, lounging in the lush grass! They appeared slightly playful, then seemed to see I was looking at them, and disappeared into the overgrowth again. 7-10 minutes later, I looked up and saw the male not more than 10 feet from me in the grass! I softly spoke, and he became a bit wary, staring at me very intently, which I returned. He did not glance down or run off immediately, which began to make me feel a bit creeped out, but I smiled and asked ‘are you hungry little brother?’ and he wheeled off. a few moments later the female made an appearance and played a little in the grass, then the male came out again and they loped off into the underbrush.
I saw this male about 4-5 days ago in the early morning loping across the backyard right at the undergrowth line and thought nothing of it other than ‘oh! how lovely!’ and felt a stab of pity for the displaced wildlife living in my narrow little strip of woods behind my street. The 2nd appearance has me thinking there is some reason now….
I have no great difficulties in my life right now. My parents and brother are already dead, my mom died in January 2014 and I miss them some days because I feel so alone sometimes. There are some worries about debt load, but as long as I stay employed, It will be alright. I sometimes wonder about a couple of relationships I have, but I am not hanging on the edge of a heart attack because of it.
I’ll think through your comments on the number 2, the timing of the appearance, and hope an answer presents itself.
I confess I gave into a childish impulse went back outside this evening with a little food and left it for the creatures; I remember a Japanese folk tale where they called them Kitsune, they were shape changers and a little mischievous – like the badger teapot.

Posted at 23:25h, 19 JulyHi
I was just taking a drive to calm my head down tonight.. Lots of thoughts, process, worries and decisions to make. I drove to the ocean to get some fresh air and to find peace. But after a while the seagull was aggressive and I left. To find more peace I began to drive into the wood and to get some view over the city.
When I’m almost at the top, I see a red fox. I don’t know whether it was a male or female. I thought maybe I scared it with my car but it just stood there… And stared at me. So intense and so beautiful. It just sat down and stared. And after 3-4 minutes it went into the wood. I drove to the top, enjoyed the view for like 5-10 minutes before I decided to drive down. And then I saw it again. But this time it just walked down and dissappeared. I drove down to where it left and tried to find him, but I didn’t.
I don’t know, usually I don’t think about it so much when I see animals, but this time it was something special that I can’t explain. Thats why I googled it and found your blog. Maybe you can help me, do you think it means something that I met this fox? And what does he/she wants?
Thank you so much for the help!

Posted at 03:15h, 31 OctoberHi Shelley:
I was at work and went to my vehicle to get something to snack on when I looked at the farmers field kiddy corner for my workplace, in the country, I saw 2 red foxes that looked like they were fighting, or maybe playing. They kind of danced around on their hind paws. They did this for about 15 minutes, while I watched. They then sauntered off into the woods. Any idea what that would symbolize?
Thanks Elle

Posted at 23:00h, 21 NovemberHi Ellie, thank you for stopping by! As with any kind of symbol, be it in a dream or life (waking dream), I would need to dig a bit deeper to get the right interpretation of these two foxes. But, I’ll give it a shot lol. Two as a number represents decisions and also the subconscious and intuition. Is/was there something hidden that has become revealed recently?

Posted at 22:17h, 27 SeptemberHi Shelley , I hope you are still checking this blog. First thank you for your informative story, and everyone that has shared here.. I am desperately searching for some answers, only about a couple of days ago have I realized that a guardian is truly trying to send me or my parents a message, however it will be up to me to figure out what that message is.
Recently I have been traveling back and forth to my parents (about 9 hours away) because my mother is terminally ill. The trip I made when we first knew that mom would not get better and that we needed to start making some hard decisions. . A beautiful red fox appeared in their back yard from the woods. My parents had never seen the fox before. (In addition to this , i would like to mention the morning we got the sad news from the surgeon, i recall a gorgeous deer was in their back yard for a visit.. that was the day before the original fox sighting.) They had never seen him/ her again until my return trip just two weeks ago, (which would have been about 4 weeks from the first trip). Not only did the fox reappear again, but the very next day there were 2 red foxes.. they must have played for an hour in my parents backyard. . I took pictures of them, they both turned and seemed to look very sweetly at my camera as i took their pictures… I have asked my parents, the foxes have not been seen since i have left. Now that mom is on hospice I am taking a leave of absence from work and moving back home to care for her and dad until her death. It will be I interesting if I see the foxes again. I will be traveling in 2 weeks.
I also thought interesting to mention, however taking the pictures through a large picture window, every picture of the foxes were not sharp. You can see every detail of how beautiful they both are, the grass , bushes, surroundings are clear. Like I said you can see all the detail, just not sharp.. And I am photographer.
I would love any insight or interpretation that you may have..

Posted at 04:13h, 28 SeptemberHi Rebekah,
I’m sorry to hear about your mother. That must be a tough thing for you and your family to go through, but she is lucky to have you as a daughter, caring for her during a very emotional and difficult time in her life.
My suggestion would be to meditate on the message of the foxes and deer. I agree with you that they are the guardians of your parents and feel that they are protecting your mother. I feel this very strongly. The deer is a message to be gentle, and I feel that loving kindness will open all hearts and make the transition peaceful for all concerned.
Hope that helps 🙂
Blessings,
Shelley

Posted at 06:59h, 29 SeptemberThank you, Shelley . I do believe you are right, as things would have it, I believe I have gotten my answer.. I won’t be waiting, apparently I am needed now and will be leave in 2 days instead of 2 weeks.. This was the message that my spirit guides have been sending me.
When I am through with this journey, I hope one day I can come to pa and attend one of your workshops.
Again, thank you for your thoughtful words.

Posted at 07:14h, 17 MayWow ! 1111 and the fox have been predominant in my life just recently the fox though. Two different times on a trip to New orleans I saw a fox. The first time on the way there, and this time the night before, which was yesterday. I was invited to stay with a family in New Orleans for a few days, and get this she told me the building was 1111. I was born on an 11 and I have even lived at an 1111. Any who.. lol, can not deny the occurrence, but am glad to know that I am not the only one who has these animals show up. Oh, yeah and black cats too. First one, then two, and yesterday I saw a mama and her kitten in my back yard, solid black…I do live in a town house though, so the cats like this park like neighborhood with many trees.. but it is kinda freakin me out. LOL..

Posted at 15:46h, 18 MayHi Sarah,
The synchronicities are going bonanza these days, let me tell you! lol Wow, you certainly are in sync with the number sequences and the fox that you saw. Every time that I see 11:11 I feel that a doorway or portal is open and I allow the new energies to flow to me. I also take it to mean that I’m on the right path and to keep on going. What do you think the black cats symbolize in your life?

Posted at 13:06h, 02 MayHi Shelley my name Is Steven
This morning at about 2 am I saw a fox
I couldn’t sleep so I decided to make a cup of tea and as I was sipping it outside the front of my home (I live in a large city)I noticed a white shadow. It almost looked like mist that appeared in front of me out of nowhere . At first I didn’t really think much of it i thoght my eyes where playing tricks but when I had a better look it was a beautiful young fox.
I was holding a small LED torch and shone directly at it. It would have been about 10 metres away. As it stopped it looked at me and I felt something. It turned away slowly and walked away. I walked toward it up my street but it just disappeared.
I have been going through quite a bit of stress in resent weeks as I’m selling my home. After many hurdles with that process, many ups and downs I finally sold my home yesterday. Today a new chapter begins for my family and myself.
The first time I saw a fox was in 1989. I was sitting beside a river bank eating with my girlfriend. It walked up to me and sniffed the food that was in front of me. I froze. I didn’t know what to do. It just looked at me sniffed the food again and walked away. When I got up to see where it went I couldnt see it.
I came across the fox a few more times after that but I was in my car driving and in all cases it was like I was following it. We were going in the same direction.
Until today when once again out of the blue we were close again. It was only by coincidence that I saw it because I was checking out my storm water pipes (which is why i was holding the tourch) i had the problem fixed yesterday and wanted to see if it was draining well before I made myself a cup of tea.
Also in the last few years I keep seeing the number 11 usually on the time. At least two three times a day. It coul be 7:11 9:11 and 11:11
11:11 almost came up almost every day when I looked at the time and that was only by chance.
Yesterday my real estate agent rang me at 5:11pm to tell me the house was sold.
I hope it’s all good.

Posted at 01:00h, 16 MayHi Shelley! I found this blog after my step dad made a comment about our neighborhood fox being somewhat of a guardian of mine. He is always around me. Tonight I was taking my dog outside to do her business, and I was somewhat nervous because I told that there is a mountain lion in my neighborhood. Well while I was trying to get my dog to hurry up the fox showed up (like always) and he just sat there and watched us. I’m interested in what your opinion of this would be. Thanks!
Shelley Szajner
Posted at 21:56h, 20 MayHi Ashley. I would have to say that Fox is a totem animal of yours. Meditation is a great way to connect to the spirit of Fox and see what message it has for you.
Jenny
Posted at 10:31h, 14 MarchI’m hoping someone can help me decipher this meaning. First of all, I always have synchronicities in my life…and more commonly occuring than anyone I know. It’s strange, but I find it comforting, also. Like someone is watching over me always. I had a dream of a winged fox that was tame. The following morning I saw a National Geographic magazine with a fox on the cover and it read: “Can this fox really be man’s best friend?” The article went on the describe a Russian woman who after 9 generations of selective breeding, had finally domesticated the fox. She has many living with her and they are tame as dogs! right after that…….like 10 minutes later, the childrens’ book club I teach had chosen their next book and the main character’s name was “Fox!!” That night I was watching TV and a commercial came on with a talking red fox. Two days later I went to see my mom out of town and we ate lunch at a place called Fox’s Pizzeria. I almost had a heart attack! So I’m not seeing real live foxes, but images of them or the words. But they keep happening. What does this mean?

Posted at 10:56h, 25 MarchHi Jenny. Sorry that it’s taken me this long to reply, but life had it’s own demands on me and I couldn’t get to my blog until today. To answer your question, what does this mean? My reply would be that Fox is trying to get your attention! This animal could be a totem animal of yours (a lifelong spirit guide) or a power animal, coming in to guide you during this specific time in your life. How do you know which it is? Meditate, dream, go within for the answers. When you wonder about things, and go within to your True Self, you stimulate your inner psychic senses that help to provide you with deeper insight. Seek and ye shall find. And it appears that you are already aware because you are paying attention to the synchronicities in your life, and as such, are being richly rewarded with signs, symbols and portents. Bravo!
I will offer my humble opinion though, I feel the winged Fox is a sign from Spirit that this animal is an important guide for you 🙂

Posted at 10:43h, 08 MayHi Steven,
Thanks for stopping by! It looks like Fox is definitely a totem animal of yours and that’s awesome! It’s funny too, how you mention that it suddenly disappears—a real fox talent! lol. The significance of seeing the same numbers like 11:11 is another synchronicity to show you, and all of us, that we are evolving into Spiritual beings. Our psychic centers or chakras and glands (pineal especially) are being activated, and so now we are experiencing things that are paranormal in nature, or magical and divine. In truth, Spirit speaks to us all the time (symbolic language), but because we are closed to it, we never see it for the most part, and hence the belief that it doesn’t exist. It was always there, but it’s only now that the masses are beginning to wake up and see, sense, feel, this other world. It’s a great time to be alive!
Blessings,
Shelley

Posted at 21:56h, 20 OctoberHi,
This is my first time visiting your site, and found it becuase of something strange I wanted to figure out. In front of ym friends house the other day I saw a fox walk down the sidewalk. The next day at a family members house I was warned when playing with my little cousin that a fox had been seen going through their backyards at night. 1 or 2 days later I brought in the mail and on the cover of a store brochure was a man sitting with a fox mask on. Within 7 to 10 days I saw one more image of a fox, but I can’t remember when or where. This was very powerful for me and has been on my mind ever since. I am afraid to leave my real name and email address on this site, but everything I have told you is true. What can it mean?

Posted at 23:52h, 20 OctoberHi,
Thank you for stopping by. Sounds like you found yourself a new friend! Fox is trying to get your attention and is sending you a powerful message by showing up in your life several times. These types of signs, symbols or synchronicities are the way in which your Higher Self or God communicates with you through dreams, visions, and the external world, such as what you have recently experienced (seeing Fox in backyards, on a brochure, etc). The Higher Self uses a symbolic language to communicate with us and if we wish to understand the messages that it sends us we have to learn this language. Fox is a cunning and clever animal and this could apply to you in several ways, such as becoming aware of someone like that in your life, or perhaps nudging you to use these qualities yourself. Fox could also be an animal totem (with you lifelong) of yours or maybe a power animal (with you for a period of time).
First, I would meditate and ask Fox what message it has for you specifically. Or, you can look up other meanings of Fox by Googling and finding other websites. As the increasing light descends onto Planet Earth, more of these types of ‘magical, mystical and mysterious’ signs will continue to occur for all of us as we head for 2012 and go through the Ascension, which means that that the lower frequencies are being raised to higher frequencies while we are still in a physical form.

Posted at 23:37h, 26 AugustWow! I know you’re right. I can think of one project, a book, that’s been trying to fully manifest for me despite post-brain surgery ADD. The other goal could be anything. You are absolutely right in your interpretation, though. I feel it and it gives me hope 😉 Thanks for sharing your take. The foxes led me to you for a clear interpretation. They are indeed cunning 😉 Much love and light to you Shelley!!!

Posted at 18:40h, 26 AugustHi Shelley! This morning, I was driving down the highway, when I saw a loose dog running across. I was ready to stop the car and save him b/c this is my natural instinct when I spot a stray. He made it across safely, as I slowed down. But then another one just like him ran across. That’s when I realized they were both foxes 😉 The highway was pretty busy, but they made it…One by one. What message could they have been sending? Hmmm…
Shelley Szajner
Posted at 21:19h, 26 AugustHi Gwen. Well, let’s see here…two foxes and one girl and a busy highway, but both foxes made it to safety. Do you have some kind of project(s) in the works, or goals (2) that you are pursuing (could be job related)? If so, it looks like you will succeed despite the upheaval that is going on.

Posted at 01:46h, 11 JulyThank you so very much. I actually teared up at your response. The first predominant fox in my life was a tragic case. When I saw it, on a sunny day at 1pm in an active neighborhood, at first glance I was unable to identify it’s species because of severe mange and sickness. Though I was able to secure the fox and find help, it was too far gone to save. That fox remains in my heart today, many years later. I even kept a picture which can be viewed here: https://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb30/DawnAshby/Fox013.jpg
I look forward to researching your site to learn everything I can. Amazing work you are doing; hope along with the knowledge you are not alone and are being looked after is a valuable medium. Everyone is always looking for answers. 🙂 Thank you Shelley.

Posted at 13:50h, 10 JulyI should mention a few things regarding my above post. I was pretty high up in a rescue organization, 2nd in command when I recently hit a bout with depression because husband and family wanting me doing things here at home and work taking up so much of me. I shut down, stopped contacting everyone, lost my job. I recently began putting myself out to the public again and the trip I am going on is to meet up with my previous organization. There will be a lot of strong women there. This fox, don’t know if it’s a he or she but will say he, was young and lived by a grain elevator near my home. Last year he would place objects on a concrete slab and spread them out in an organized fashion. There was a long leg of a bird, a groundhog head, a mouse, bones, etc. My husband had purchased over $100 in meat from a door to door salesman. He is the only meat eater in our home. What were we to do with a freezer full of steak? I thawed some and every once in a while would leave a raw filet mignon on the concrete for the young fox.
I do not know about spiritual things, but am curios because I read about travel, family, etc. and so much sounds right. Of course there is always the possibility that I’m either unlucky enough to be surrounded by rabid foxes that will come near people or lucky that I haven’t been attacked by a rabid fox…or that this last fox was just wondering why I haven’t been leaving steak for him this year.

Posted at 00:11h, 11 JulyHi Dawn,
I read both of your emails. Thank you for writing to me and sharing your stories. From my perspective I would say that Fox is a Totem of yours or at the very least a Power Animal that is very strong around you. It makes sense to me now with your involvement in the Animal Rescue. Isn’t it interesting that he’s showing up just as you are about to meet everyone in your organization again?
I’m sorry to hear about your depression (I suffered from this malady once) but I’m glad to hear you are getting out in the public again. And it looks like Fox is happy about it too 🙂
Good luck on your trip.

Posted at 04:04h, 10 JulyInteresting. Tonight I went to fill up on gas late and came home to find a fox on my front door step. I got out of the car and he walked toward the road. I spoke to him and he stopped and I thought he wanted to come toward me, but then he walked a few steps further, stopped, looked at me again, and did this until he was across the street in the neighbor’s yard. I’m leaving to drive by myself on a long trip tomorrow for our animal rescue organization. The last long trip I drove alone I saw a fox on my way out (when I say ‘see a fox’ I don’t mean just see it…it’s something surreal.. and it stops and looks at me) and then when I arrived close to home late, I saw what looked like a fox about to attack a cat, and I stopped the car and said, “Fox! Leave that cat alone.” This fox stopped and again looked like it wanted to come toward me, but then kept looking at me as the cat simply walked away. So I looked this up and found this page. I have many other fox stories, but these are the most recent. The fox in the front yard and on my doorstep just happened.

Posted at 23:16h, 09 JuneToday there were 2 foxes in my yard at dinnertime. My daughter shouted, “Fox!” I discovered there were two and one was a male and he was guarding the other who was laying down. He came out and looked at us and marked our tree for a long and thorough time. He left her and she is still out there. We have tried to connect with her and she won’t move. She will not flinch. I have been seeing them since last spring. Today the male came to my husband’s window and looked at him. Later he brought her back to us. it’s odd.

Posted at 10:38h, 10 JuneWow, that’s quite a fox story you have! Perhaps the Fox is a totem of your husbands? Fox is also the family protector and is a great talisman for those who travel far and wide. The male and female symbols are very significant and there may be a need to balance something in your life or his. The number 2 can be about choices, decisions and/or something that was hidden in the subconscious has now become conscious. It’s obvious to me that Fox is trying to get your attention in a big way 🙂

I’ve had a similar experience with crystals and it’s been driving me batty! LOL. I can’t find my Zincite and Chlorite. They were together in a pouch when I lost them somewhere in my abode. I sure hope they show up again. Good luck with finding your opal too.
Glad you like the series. Owl is next and it may end up being a two-parter!

Posted at 20:38h, 09 JuneHey Shelly;
When you spoke of the fox coming and going from your life it made me remember that crystals do the same. I’ve had various crystals, pink quartz, obsidian, tiger eye and others go missing for days, months and years only to surface again at the edge or a garden, in a hutch drawer on the floor, in a pocket. The most recent missing stone is a rather large opal.
Keep up the great series.
