Animal Symbolism—Cricket

Animal Symbolism—Cricket

I love to fall asleep in the arms of a cricket song. The sweet sound slips through my open window on a velvety night breeze and then carries me on a magic carpet into the dream world, my favorite place to be.

Cricket made its appearance to me in the film, Pinocchio, in the guise of Jiminy Cricket, the lovable character and conscience of Pinocchio. I didn’t realize that cricket had a message for me until the next day, and seeing it was a sign.

As I watched the movie, Pinocchio, in my living room that night, one of my favorite scenes opened on the TV screen — the Blue Faery that comes into Geppetto’s bedroom to give Pinocchio life. The song, “When You Wish Upon a Star,” began to play and I started singing along with it, and right at that moment a tiny flash of brilliant blue light appeared in my left eye.

I had been getting this “flash of light” for about 12 years now, but when it first started happening I thought that my retina was detaching, or worse. I got a check up with a clean bill of health, but I was still left wondering what could be the cause of these flashes of light. I got the answer a year later when I started reading, The Presence of Other Worlds, written by Wilson Van Dusen about the 18th century scientist, philosopher and mystic, Emanuel Swedenborg.

When I read the following passage in the book I had a huge AHA moment, “…During this period he (Emanuel Swedenborg) begins to experience the rare and little-known phenomena called photism. The person who meditates intensely, seeking inner guidance, may find a signal system to guide him. When what he is thinking meets inward approval, the person may suddenly see a flash of light. This light may vary from a pinpoint to a large area, and it is characteristically bright.”

BINGO. From that moment on I understood what I believed was happening to me. I had big flashes, small flashes, in the right eye, or the left eye, and they could be blue, white or violet in color. I would think of something and a flash of light appeared. Or I could be standing around someone and see a flash of light nearby. I now believe that my psychic abilities were awakening at that time, and hence my experience of photism. It has become my internal guidance system for making better choices in life now. I’ve learned to trust my own guidance and intuition, which I hadn’t been able to do for years.

Cricket signals a time for us to trust our inner knowing or intuition. We should listen to our gut and what we believe to be true based on our own perceptions. Many folktales say that finding a cricket in the home is a symbol of good luck and to kill one will bring you bad luck. And other people believe that finding a cricket in your house is a sign that a relative has reincarnated. The singing of the cricket also heralds the beginning of a happy period in our lives.

The very next day when I walked into my office and sat down to work, I heard a cricket chirping loudly. I thought that it was in the office next to me, since my coworker gets them often, to her dismay. She came into my office a few minutes later.

“The cricket has to be in your office,” she said, holding a can of bug spray. “I can’t find it in mine.”

And it was in my office. She zeroed in on the chirping and found it hiding behind my portable fan like a wayward traveler, guilty as charged.

“Don’t kill it,” I said, alarmed. “It could be my grandfather.”

She laughed at me as I scooped it up in my hands. I knew that if I didn’t do something quick, the cricket would meet it’s nemesis — a can of bug spray, and I wasn’t about to let that happen. So I went outside and set it free, thanking it for the timely message, which was to continue being open to guidance from my Higher Self coming through flashes of light, dreams, or my intuition, and to never stop wishing upon a star because dreams really do come true.

Any idea what it means to accidentally kill one? I was trying to free him outside and the glass I was using to guide him accidentally squished him 🙁

Sorry to hear that! I’m sure it’s nothing…but it could mean that you’re ‘squishing’ your intuition.

Last night, while watching tv in our family room, my husband said that there was this “huge, ginormous black bug on the floor”. I was comfortable in my chair, and did not see it, as it was in back of me. I told him to step on it. He said, “no, it’s too big”. So, I managed to get out of my chair (having been nursing my back from my chiropractic visit earlier in the day). I saw this “ginormous” bug. It was not the proverbial cockroach, common in the south, but not in our house). So, I got a paper towel, chased it, and scooped it up in the towel, tightly. I tossed it in the garbage in the garage. Now, I read, I should not have “killed” it (I know I did). Today, just while walking, my back spasmed so badly I could not even pick up an empty box on the floor. I sat, with my feet up, as suggested. I thought of my deceased mother, telling her how much I missed her so very much. Tears in my eyes. Still excruciating pain. Ice pack and ibupropehn and more rest. Finally, no pain. So here I sit….I hear a cricket near me! Was my “dead” one not dead? Did it crawl out of the can and come back? Is this his brother? Is this my beloved mom, telling me I will be ok, and to hang in there? That is what I want to believe. This cricket will live in our house. I will see you, soon, Mom…whenever you say. Chirp away, my friend. I am paying attention.

I just moved into a new house and I’ve been finding crickets everywhere. They keep surprising me, like jumping right in front of me as I walk, or out from under something when I pick it up (in fact, I hear a cricket chirping somewhere in the house right now) and I’ve been killing them on the spot.. (it’s like a reflex, scream then stomp.) The weird thing is, I’m the only person in the house it’s happening to. My family thinks I’m nuts but I’ve found around 15-20 in the last month. I feel like it could be some kind of sign/symbolism and now I feel badly for killing them.

Hi Luna (this is one of my nicknames btw),

Funny you should write me about crickets. I found one in my living room last night, just staring at me. I knew that it was telling me to pay attention to my intuition and let that be my guide for the issues I’ve been having lately. Wondering if cricket is telling you the same thing? Perhaps your intuitive abilities are increasing as indicated by so many crickets. Just a thought 🙂

      Thanks for stopping by!

I found this sight quite by accident. Today I decide to do a sage cleansing on my home. I felt that things were just a little bit out of balance so as I cleansed my home and told the negative energy to leave and asked the lord to fill my home with light, love and purification i hadn’t thought much about the cleansing once I was finished. Its been about 6 hours since the cleansing and I decided to go out and clean my walk way. I then decided to check my mail and the craziest thing is going on. 21 Large crickets on my concrete mailbox protector and on the plants around the mailbox. I found myself mesmerized by these guys. I looked to my neighbors yards and no crickets. I find this very strange that after doing a sage cleansing this appears out of no where and then I find this sight (wondering what crickets symbolize). I now am intrigued to see what happens next.

      Hi Hayley,

Wow, that kind of cricket message would make me sit up and notice! lol The fact that they were around your mail box is quite significant. Mail representing messages, and so the crickets were there to give you a message. And you counted them too, which is great, and tells me even more. The 21 is the World card in the Tarot, and also an Archetype, so I can gather from this that you have completed a cycle, perhaps a long one, and that ties in with your Sage cleaning as well (clear out the old and bring in the new). All good! Look for new beginnings in your life to start, especially if you see cricket around (Things will happen quickly I feel). That will be your cue to follow the yellow brick road 🙂

      Blessings,
      Shelley

    Hi Shelly

i usually google dream interpretation and what animals symbolises. i was early this morning for work and for some reason i found a cricket in my office, underneath a slighlty sliced avocado which probably slipped from my bag when i left work last week friday. as i picked up the avo to throw it away, there is was, i freaked out but didn’t have the guts to kill it. i then took a long feather duster and took it out of my office, down the stairs and out of the building. i didn’t know the insert’s name until my colleague told me it was a cricket and i decided to google it immediately.

To my surprise i started thinking about my late dad after i threw it away and i felt so bad after i read your story especially about “reincarnation”. Do you think throwing it away could be a sign for bad luck?

      Hi Andrica,

No, I do not believe that you will incur bad luck at all. The purpose of the cricket appearing to you is clear to me, in that you are beginning to listen to your intuition, and secondly, that a message came from your father through the cricket. The important thing is that you are paying attention! Not everyone does this. When you start to open up to this part of yourself, the Higher Self, Spirit, Intuition, 6th Sense, etc., the more that these types of synchronicities will start to happen. And now that we are moving rapidly into the higher frequencies, these events are occurring so often that I don’t even bother writing them down in my journal anymore, as they are part of my everyday life now.

      Blessings,
      Shelley

    Hi Shelley,

Thank you so much for this meaning about crickets,I’ve been having weird… experiences with crickets,Hours prior to my Nana passing away I saw a cricket in her room, this was in a hospital on the 2nd floor anyway I’m not really good with insects & freaked out, So the nurse whacked it with a kidney dish & as she walked out of the room it slipped under the door ,then about 4 hours later my Nana passed away.

Then after my Nana’s passing there were crickets coming under the door (during winter) and the strangest thing is when ever I think about love ones that have passed or I’m upset sure enough a cricket appears,One of the other weirdest one was on the train ,I was on my way into work & I was thinking of my Nana & just as the station I was getting off was approaching I saw a cricket on the wall inside the train,I couldn’t believe it so I took a picture of it with my phone.

Now tonight a giant cricket is on my balcony with little baby crickets,Which is a 1 storey balcony & there’s no bushes or trees near my balcony.

I wish they weren’t so scary just them jumping sends me running but there also there in the most oddest of places/times.

Once again thank you for helping me understand the meaning of them.

      Hi Jackie,

That’s an amazing story and thank you for sharing it! It never ceases to amaze me how synchronistic events take place in our lives to let us know that Spirit is all around, helping us, and waiting for us to acknowledge it.

      Blessings,

Yes, I agree that cricket is a sign for our intuition being activated and to pay attention to feelings, dreams, thoughts, etc. that get our attention. Trusting our gut is essential and took me awhile before I could do so completely. I’m too much of a thinker. lol. Did you know that we have a gut brain? We have neurons in our stomach area as well as our heart (heart brain). Fascinating stuff!

I had an amazing inspirational weekend at an Artist’s retreat planned by my best friend (a very accomplished Artist and a pillar of our community) on a 40 acre wilderness estate in the Santa Cruz mountains. It was held in a large yurt (with a fireplace and skylight) overlooking a slopped meadow with the forest and ocean beyond. I was so impressed by the beauty of it all when I first got there, but what really impressed me right away was the extraordinary sound of thousands of crickets chirping in the meadow! I immediately took my SLR camera and plowed through the grass with it capturing video and the sound of cricket friends, and then panned to capture my real friends. It all just naturally seemed to go together SO well! All so soothing, and when I got home and read your first few lines, now I know why…….thanks so much.
Now I really understand why the 2 day experience was so meaningful in so many different levels……there were the amazing friendships, the beauty of it all, the inner piece and intuition that allowed us to focus on the beautiful model and let our creativity flow through our pencils………but how extraordinary it was to find out that the model was an opera singer as well!
We went outside on a porch overlooking the meadow and the forest beyond, and when it was almost silent, the beautiful sound of the crickets was pronounced, and then she began to sing………..Oh my God!…..what magic.

What a wonderful ‘cricket’ story, Ariel, and thanks for sharing. You are right about the awareness, and as each one of us opens up to communicating with the animals of our world, more of them will come to us and as I like to say, ‘magic, happens’ 🙂

    Hi Bryan,
I’m sorry to hear about your troubles. I too have gone through a divorce, twice, so I do understand what you are going through. It can be very emotional and trying but things do turn out alright in the end, even though it doesn’t feel like it now. Sounds like you have a Spirit Guide or Angel around you. They usually show up when we are going through a rough patch or big change, like you are experiencing right now. I know they do for me. The Cricket could symbolize getting in touch with your own feelings and intuition as well as opening the heart. It could also be a way for the Spirit that is around you to let you know it’s around. Learning how to figure out what any symbol is takes a little time and it can mean many things at the same time. LOL. Either way, it’s always magical when these things happen and they give us hope that life is good and that we are being looked after.

Blessings and Love to you 🙂

    Hi Shelley,

I found your website as I was searching online for some understanding about crickets. I’m currently at my favorite starbucks spot and was surprised when I got here to find one of the outer walls covered with crickets! I’ve never seen this before and was intrigued to understand if there was some deeper meaning. Now here I am at your website. I’ve only read the the first 6 lines so far and have already felt that I found my answer. Thank you for having it here. I’m now also intrigued by your website and will keep it bookmarked to find out more about you and your writings. I like the style of your site, it has a nice feel and you talk about the imagination, which is a key point for me in my life … my existence. Anyway, I wanted to take the time to say hello and thank you again for providing the insight I was seeking.

Hello, Felicia, and thank you for your kind words and encouragement. I’m glad you find my blog interesting and helpful, as that was my intention—to share knowledge and wisdom to all who were interested in a different slant on life. I had originally set out to create a blog that supported my budding children’s book career but it detoured, taking a life of its own as a metaphysical kind of blog. No matter, since it has inspired me to write an ebook on my experiences based on the blog and more.
